The Annual Business Survey (ABS) provides information on selected economic and demographic characteristics for businesses and business owners by sex, ethnicity, race, and veteran status. The ABS is conducted jointly by the U.S. Census Bureau and the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics within the National Science Foundation. The ABS replaces the five-year Survey of Business Owners (SBO) for employer businesses, the Annual Survey of Entrepreneurs (ASE), the Business R&D and Innovation for Microbusinesses survey (BRDI-M), and the innovation section of the Business R&D and Innovation Survey (BRDI-S). The data are compiled by combining data collected on businesses and business owners in the ABS with data collected on the economic census and administrative records. Business ownership is defined as havingmore than 50% of the stock or equity in the business and is categorized by

  • Sex: Male; female; or equally male/female
  • Ethnicity: Hispanic; equally Hispanic/non-Hispanic; non-Hispanic
  • Race: White; Black or African American; American Indian or Alaska Native;Asian; Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander; minority; equally minority/nonminority; nonminority
  • Veteran status: Veteran; equally veteran/nonveteran; nonveteran
  • Publicly held and other firms not classifiable by sex, ethnicity, race, and veteran status

Firms equally male-/female-owned, equally minority-/nonminorityowned, and equally veteran-/nonveteran-owned are counted andtabulated as separate categories.


Loan by Industry: Funding Volume 2012 to 2020

To delve into who is receiving SBA 7(a) loans by industry, we considered which industriesreceived the highest amount of SBA loan dollars between 2012 and 2018. This was determined by evaluating the cumulative loan approval amount for each industry during this time period. Based on this data, hotels and motels received the most SBA loan funding between 2012 and 2018. The average loan size for hotels is $1,400,732,000 compared to the average SBA 7(a) loan amount of $425,500.
